Nadi Procedure

The Method of Study

The Nadi reading process begins with a thumb impression, followed by careful searching, verification, reading, interpretation, and guidance through the relevant Kaandams.

Palm leaf reading procedure

The Method

How the Leaf Is Searched

When a thumb impression from a native is obtained, it is handed over by the reader at the library. The palm-leaf bundles are classified and indexed in the library according to thumb impression to facilitate easy searching of the bundles.

For each thumb impression there are likely to be around five to six bundles; each such bundle will contain between 50 to 100 leaves. The leaf of one particular individual may be found in the first bundle or in any other bundle among the six. Sometimes it may not be found, as the predictions from this holy script are confined to some limited souls.

Hence, the process of finding out this specific leaf is laborious and time consuming. The reader has to read out one statement from the first leaf and, if it is confirmed by the native, he will read out the second statement to verify its veracity. If this statement does not hold true for the native, the reader will continue searching leaf after leaf, bundle after bundle, to trace the one leaf in which all particulars concerning the native correctly appear.

Selection and Reading

Procedure for Selection and Reading of the Siva Naadis

When a Jathaka or customer wants to consult the Naadi, he has to contact the centre over phone, in person, or by post and get a date confirmed.

01

Appointment

One day before the appointed date, the customer has to reconfirm his arrival or position, or the date will be cancelled. At present the waiting list may extend up to three months, so if the customer is unable to come, the date can be provided to another waiting customer.

02

Name Not Required

At the time of getting the date, and up to the time of reading the Naadi, the name of the person consulted need not be given. His name will be told in the prediction itself. He can give a friend, relative, or code name, which must be remembered while coming for consultation.

03

Thumb Impression

On the appointment date, the right-hand thumb impression for a male, or left-hand thumb impression for a female, is given at the centre. With the help of this impression, the bundles containing the relevant set are traced.

Leaf Matching

Confirmation Through Sakshis

In each bundle there may be predictions relating to hundreds of persons. Sometimes a particular palm leaf may contain predictions relating to more than one customer. In very rare cases, one leaf or a set of leaves may contain exclusively predictions relating to one person only. In such cases of single-person predictions, the original palm leaves are generally given to the concerned Jathaka.

The selection of the particular leaf relating to a person is a time consuming process. It may take two to three hours, and at other times the customer may be fortunate to get it within reference to five or six leaves.

Every leaf pertaining to a person would contain facts about that person: his and his wife's name, parents' names, number of brothers and sisters, order of birth in the family, whether he is the son of the first or second wife if his father had married twice, and other definite facts. These are called Sakshis, or witnesses.

The customer should confirm or deny the facts when they are being read from the leaves, but should not tell the facts in advance. If the particulars given in a leaf do not agree entirely, the next leaf is taken and the process continues until the correct leaf completely matches the family particulars.

Recording

Original Tamil Predictions and Translation

We record the original Tamil predictions as given in the Naadi in a notebook and give it to the customers. Then it is transferred to another language as they wish. In the past, rare single-leaf cases have been recorded, including a senior IAS officer in 1998, a senior politician in May 2000, and a Japanese customer who consulted in 1995.

In many cases, persons do not get their leaf. This means that the time to know their future has not come. Periodically, new bundles are brought from the Head Office, so those who did not get their Naadi in earlier attempts may get it subsequently. No fee is charged when the customer does not find his or her leaf, despite the time spent to trace it.

Once the leaves are traced, the original Tamil prediction is recorded as it is in the notebook. These predictions are in poetic Tamil with code words for astrological terms. They are read and deciphered by well trained Asans, who then explain the predictions in spoken Tamil. These are then translated into Hindi or English and recorded for the customer, along with the notebook containing the original predictions.

General Kaandam

General Kaanda Predictions

For male seekers, the right hand thumb impression is taken for the Nadi leaf search. For female seekers, the left hand thumb impression is taken. This thumb impression helps identify the correct palm leaf bundle for the reading process.

Remedial Measures or Pariharas

In Naadi Astrology, due importance is given to performing Pariharas, or remedial measures, to atone for Doshas or sins. The Pariharas are generally suggested in three types of cases.

01

Past Birth Sins

According to the Karma theory of the Hindus, good or bad deeds done in past birth continue in the present life. If the sins are serious, the native is advised to sincerely regret them and perform certain Pariharas. These remedies are compared to umbrellas: they may not prevent suffering completely, but they reduce the severity and density of problems.

The Pariharams are training grounds to cultivate devotion to God, love, compassion, and service. Sukshma Naadi prescribes pilgrimages to holy temples, Puja and Abhishekam, offering food and clothes to poor and handicapped persons, feeding birds such as crows, and planting shade-giving trees in public places.

02

Gochara Effects

The second reason for suffering identified by Sukshma Naadi is caused by Gochara effects, or temporary planetary transits, such as the seven-and-a-half-year Saturn period and other planets transiting unfavorable houses. The Pariharams suggested in these cases are similar to those suggested for past-birth causes.

03

Protection from Evil Effects

The third reason identified by Sukshma Naadi is suffering caused by enemies, jealous persons, evil eyes, envy, conspiracy, pilli, sunyam, and similar influences. To protect oneself, the Naadi may prescribe Manthra Japas for a specified period, such as one or two Mandalams, where one Mandalam means 48 days.

The Naadi describes which Manthra Japa is to be performed, in favor of which deity, and what is to be done with the Manthra-Japa-chanted copper plate. It is significant that Sukshma Naadi never suggests retaliatory evil practices; it prescribes prayers to Vedic Gods and protective worship only.

Final Guidance

Remedies Are Done Only When Suggested

These Pariharas are to be done only by those who are asked to do so in the general chapter predictions. Others need not do any remedy. Some persons are asked to do remedial measures as suggested in Shanthi Kandam, Chapter 13, while some are asked to refer to both Shanthi and Deeksha Kandam, Chapters 13 and 14, depending on the severity of the Doshas or defects.

The Shanthi Kanda Pariharams are to be done personally by the customer. The Deeksha Kanda Pariharams can also be done through Vedic Pundits well versed in these Manthra Pujas.
